FIGURE 1. Inspired by a traveling fiddler, Albert Gore pestered his parents to buy him a fiddle. In his first campaign for Congress in 1938 friends persuaded him to interrupt his speeches and play. His playing helped draw crowds and gave him recognition in a multicandidate field.

FIGURE 2. Pauline LaFon was one of the earliest female graduates from Vanderbilt University. Albert Gore fell in love with her when she was working as a waitress in the Nashville YMCA and he was studying law at night school. They married in 1937. Perhaps the most natural politician in the Gore family, Pauline was Gore's closest political adviser for the rest of his life.
